Cabo San Lucas is a well known fishing destination in the state of Baja California Sur. It is located at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, and is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the Gulf of California, or Sea of Cortez. The Sea of Cortez is known as one of the most biologically diverse seas on the planet, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means lots of fish and wildlife in these waters for you to enjoy! The roots of the city are, of course, in fishing. In recent years, the city has grown into a tourist destination with world class resorts, spas, and golf courses. It boasts beautiful white sand beaches and has all the water sports you can imagine from surfing to diving to kayaking from island to island. In the winter season, grey whales come to the sea of Cortez to have their young and there are many other amazing animals to see in these waters such as colonies of sea lions, whale sharks, humpback whales, killer whales, leatherback sea turtles, and manta rays just to name a few! Cabo San Lucas fishing is famous for being on a GRAND scale and is known as the “Marlin Capital of the World.” It also has the biggest fishing tournament in the world for Marlin? The conditions in the seas surrounding Cabo San Lucas make it one of the best places in the world for fishing! One reason is because you have two distinctly different seas meeting in deep warm water, the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. Another reason Cabo fishing is unique is because there are geological structures called “sea mounts” in the ocean, which are basically huge mountains and outcroppings underwater. This is the perfect home for smaller fish and, more importantly to you, the bigger fish that feed on them! The types of fish in these waters are: Striped, Blue and Black Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish, Wahoo, Dorodo, Yellowfin Tuna, Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Sierra Mackerel, Yellowtail, Snapper, and Grouper. Depending on the time of the year, you might even snag a Mako shark! It is also worth mentioning that you can get to the deep fishing waters in no time, cutting out the long boat ride to the fishing grounds. So what are you waiting for? You will not be disappointed in Cabo San Lucas fishing!
